Philippines says its coast guard ship and supply boat are hit by Chinese vessels near disputed shoal

MANILA, Philippines -- A Chinese coast guard ship and one of its militia vessels separately bumped a Philippine coast guard ship and a military-run supply boat Sunday off a disputed shoal in the South China Sea “in dangerous, irresponsible and illegal actions,” Philippine officials said. They did not say if there were injuries or damage from the two incidents off the Second Thomas Shoal that the United States, a longtime treaty ally of the Philippines, immediately condemned. The Philippine government also condemned the latest confrontation in “the strongest degree” and called it a violation of Manila’s sovereignty. The Chinese coast guard said the Philippine vessels “trespassed” into what it said were Chinese waters “without authorization” despite repeated radio warnings, prompting its ships to stop them. It blamed the Philippine vessels for causing the collisions. "The Philippine side’s behavior seriously violates the international rules on avoiding collisions at sea and thr

Police dog's attack on Black trucker in Ohio echoes history

CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio -- As Jadarrius Rose drove his 18-wheeler through rural Ohio, a simple missing mudflap caught the highway patrol’s eye. The trip ended with a police dog’s powerful jaws clamping down on Rose even as he tried to surrender. As he stood with his hands up beside the highway on July 4, at least six law enforcement officers surrounded him at a distance, one calling forcefully to the K-9 handler: “Do not release the dog," highway patrol video shows. Nevertheless, a Belgian Malinois is seen on the video either breaking free or being set loose. At first, the animal seems confused, racing past Rose toward officers at the far end of the truck, then turning back and running for Rose, then 23. By then the trucker is on his knees, hands still high, as an officer shouts, “Get the dog off of him!” That day, Rose joined a long list of Black Americans attacked by police dogs, a history well documented by journalists, academics and filmmakers. Investigations into such cases ha

Current Climate: For Half Of The World, Peak Fossil Fuel Use Is In The Rearview Mirror

This week’s Current Climate , which every Saturday brings you the latest news about the business of sustainability. Sign up to get it in your inbox every week. The world may be close to hitting an “irreversible solar tipping point.” Getty Images A new report from analyst firm Ember has found that for over half of the world’s economies, fossil fuel use peaked at least five years ago. Consequently, carbon emissions from these countries have also fallen–20% over the past decade. According to the report, these 107 countries represent 38% of global energy demand and many of them have seen a decline in greenhouse gas emissions despite growth in that demand. “We are on the cusp of a new era of fossil decline in the global power sector,” Dave Jones, the firm’s global insights lead, said in a press release. A big part of the reason for this has been the decreasing costs of renewable energy sources , which have an advantage of not requiring fuel and therefore don’t have their ongoi

If Bruce Arena Returns, MLS Must Make Him Explain Revs Incident

Bruce Arena New England Revolution sits on the sideline while coaching the New England Revolution ... [+] during a game at D.C. United's Audi Field on September 27, 2020. Getty Images A juicy — if probably unlikely — possibility emerged on Friday afternoon in the form of reporting from The Athletic and ESPN , saying that recently resigned New England Revolution manager Bruce Arena is candidate for the vacant D.C. United job. The link is intriguing for a lot of reasons. Arena’s career as arguably the greatest American manager began at the pro level with D.C. when he guided the Black-and-Red to the first two MLS Cup titles ever contested in 1996 and 1997. Presently, both the club and the coach find themselves at low points. D.C. doesn’t appear to have much of a short- or long-term vision after parting with most-recent manager Wayne Rooney. Meanwhile, Arena resigned from the New England job after an investigation into alleged inappropriate remarks, apologizing for his behavio

Cell-cultured meat is far from dead, but it’s time for a trillion-dollar Biden moonshot

You know things are hot when celebrities are signing term sheets. While helpful, it’s not their money that’s propping up the food-tech ecosystem. So the question here is this: Do VCs have the fortitude to continue supporting the more than 150 startups seeking to design a cell-cultured analogue to cheap meat? Perhaps the better question is: Should they? “Gone are the days of big rounds,” says Anthony Chow, cofounder of Agronomics, a publicly listed sustainability fund, which has invested in several cultivated meat startups, including Blue Nalu, Mosa Meat, Meatable, and China-based CellX. For example, Blue Nalu is pursuing what some call “the Holy Grail” of animal flesh—bluefin tuna. The San Diego-based startup closed a series B funding of $33.5 million this October. Chow says that surely would have been bigger in a better market. Venture capital is not moving like it was in the last decade. “I expect we’ll see more down rounds and some of that is a natural readjustment to valuation
