Why Austin’s Grand Prix Is America’s Biggest F1 Race — By A Mile

The U.S. Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, draws about 440,000 fans over three days. Clive Mason - Formula 1/Formula 1 via Getty Images Although Miami and Las Vegas grab the headlines, this weekend’s U.S. Grand Prix will outdraw both races—and it continues to pick up speed. T he debut of the Miami Grand Prix last year set a Formula 1 record in the United States with an average viewership of 2.6 million. This year, all eyes are on another American addition to the F1 calendar, the Las Vegas Grand Prix, which will hit the Strip next month and become—in the words of one series executive —“the home of Formula 1 in the U.S.” Lost in the shuffle has been the race that, in many ways, is sitting in pole position, with ten more years of history, a far larger crowd and claim to the name “U.S. Grand Prix.” That would be the series’ stop in Austin, Texas, which had a rocky few years financially after coming onto the scene in 2012 but is expected to draw three-day attendance this weekend in line...

Space travel needs more time to take off, companies argue

SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic may get to space differently, but they agree on one thing: The industry needs more time in the so-called learning period on commercial spaceflight that is set to expire January 1. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) introduced a bill in September that would extend the rulemaking moratorium for another eight years.  The Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee held its own hearing this week on the topic with representatives from the three companies flying private citizens to space. Here are some of our biggest takeaways: Fund the FAA Multiple officials said the FAA will need more money and staff to establish and enforce regulations on the commercial spaceflight industry. The Phillies lost the 2022 World Series to the Houston Astros. Last year, the Phillies had a very difficult road to navigate on their way to facing the Astros on MLB’s biggest stage. The Phillies defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in the Wild Card Series. The Phillies defeated the Atlanta Braves in the National League Division Series. The Phillies then defeated the San Diego Padres in the National League Championship Series. The Phillies then lost to the Astros, 4-2, in the World Series. What is biochar? Why an ancient farming technique could help fight climate change

Image
On a site next to a sawmill in Waverly, Virginia , a startup takes sawdust and offcuts from the mill and heats it up to turn it into biochar, a material that can store carbon for hundreds or thousands of years. The project, which recently began operating, will capture a little more than 10,000 metric tons of CO2 each year. Microsoft will buy the carbon removal credits as part of its plan to become a carbon negative company . [Photo: Restoration Bioprojects] It’s one of a growing number of biochar production plants. The potential is big: A new study calculated that if biochar production scales up as much as possible globally, it could capture as much as 3 billion metric tons of CO2 a year, or 6% of global emissions. Here’s how it works. [Photo: Josiah Hunt/Pacific Biochar] What is biochar? When organic waste (like wheat stalks or manure from a farm, or sawdust from forestry) is heated up to extremely high temperatures without oxygen, it turns into a charcoal-like material ...
