‘Milktoast McEnany’: Trump Attacks Former Press Secretary After She Says DeSantis Is Closing In On Him In Polls

Topline

Former President Donald Trump attacked former White House press secretary and longtime supporter Kayleigh McEnany on Tuesday after she appeared on Fox News and claimed Trump’s primary rival Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was gaining on him in the polls for the Iowa primary.

Key Facts

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump called out “Kayleigh ‘Milktoast’ McEnany” saying she gave out the wrong poll numbers on Fox News and insisted he holds a 34-point lead on DeSantis “not 25.”

The insult is likely a misspelling of the word “milquetoast,” which is an adjective used to describe a feeble or meek person.

Trump's post also insinuates that McEnany deliberately shares what he deems are the real numbers.

“RINOS & Globalists can have her,” Trump wrote, using the acronym for “Republican in name only.”

It is unclear which poll both McEnany and Trump were referencing.

News Peg

Earlier on Tuesday evening, McEnany appeared on the Fox News show Jesse Watters Primetime, where she talked about the DeSantis’ poll numbers in Iowa, which will host the first round of the GOP’s presidential primaries. “If you look at the polling now, it was Trump [with a] 34 [point lead] in Iowa, it’s now Trump 25,” the former White House press secretary said. McEnany noted that DeSantis’ team should see this as a positive and say they “closed the gap by 9 points” since the Florida Gov. announced his plans to run. “Still, Trump’s hugely ahead, but they say they’re closing the gap. That’s their argument,” she added.

Big Number

42 points. That is the size of the lead that Trump holds over DeSantis in Iowa according to an Emerson College poll conducted between May 19 and 22. The Florida Gov. officially announced his run on May 24.

Key Background

Although she has been a long-time vocal supporter of Trump, this isn’t the first time that McEnany has made a remark that may irk her former boss. After the Republicans turned in a worse-than-expected performance during the 2022 midterms, McEnany was one of the first people to urge Trump to delay the announcement of his 2024 run.
