‘Succession’ Finale Hits Series-High 2.9 Million Viewers—But Falls Far Behind Other HBO Hits And Broadcast Shows
Topline
Succession went out on a high Sunday night, securing nearly 3 million viewers for its series finale—and although it eclipsed viewership of its previous season finales, the tycoon drama remains in the shadow of finales from HBO juggernauts like Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, House of the Dragon and The Last of Us.
Key Facts
The 2.9 million viewers of Succession’s season finale is a 68% increase from the 1.7 million viewers who watched the season three finale.
The show is currently averaging 8.7 million viewers across its fourth season as of Tuesday, including delayed viewing—compared to the average of 7.2 million that watched last season.
The 2019 series finale of Game of Thrones clocked in at 19.3 million viewers, while season finales for shows like House of the Dragon and The Last of Us pulled in 9.3 million and 8.2 million viewers respectively.
HBO classic The Sopranos secured 11.9 million viewers for its series finale in 2007, while Sex and the City reached 10.6 million viewers for its own finale in 2004.
And beyond the realm of prestige subscription cable shows, broadcast TV shows still draw consistently higher audiences on a weekly basis than shows like Succession—as shows like Young Sheldon, NCIS and FBI brought in more than 6.5 million viewers for episodes aired in the third week of May, according to Nielsen.
Broadcast sitcom Seinfeld aired to an audience of 76 million viewers for its 1998 finale and Friends ended its series in 2004 with 52.2 million finale viewers.
Key Background
Succession, which follows the story of three siblings vying for control of their aging father’s media conglomerate, is one of several HBO shows that has garnered millions of viewers. Succession first aired in June 2018 and although it is finished, lead actor Kieran Culkin said of the finale that, “It feels like there could be more, but it also feels like it could be the end. Both feel right.” The show has gained popularity for its snappy writing and high-profile, tragic characters inspired by conglomerate families of the real world. In addition to Culkin, the show’s main actors include Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook and Matthew Macfadyen.
Big Number
Succession’s 8.9 IMDb rating puts it among the most highly rated HBO shows, narrowly surpassing series such as True Detective, The Last of Us and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Shows such as Breaking Bad, The Sopranos and Band of Brothers rank well above the 8.9 mark.
Tangent
Comedy-drama Barry concluded its series alongside Succession on Sunday night, with a total of 700,000 views. Barry is currently averaging 3.4 million viewers for its final season, according to Warner Bros. Discovery.
